Job Description

Job Overview:

We’re looking for a motivated and detail-oriented Trainee Electrical Design Engineer to join our building services engineering team. This is a fantastic opportunity to develop practical skills and technical knowledge in the electrical design of buildings, covering areas such as lighting, fire alarms, power distribution, security systems, and renewable energy.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lighting & Fire Alarm Design:
  • Understand luminaire selections, emergency lighting types, and design lighting control systems. Assist with fire alarm system design and integration with other systems.
  • Electrical Infrastructure & Power Systems:
  • Undertake utility mapping and applications, perform load assessments, and assist with switchgear selection, LV schematics, and external service layouts.
  • Small Power & Containment Design:
  • Design small power layouts, containment systems, and understand coordination with other services. Perform cable sizing and selection.
  • Specialist Systems:
  • Support the design of nurse call systems, security and alarm systems (CCTV, access control, intruder alarms), public address systems, and lightning protection.
  • Renewables & Data Systems:
  • Contribute to the design of photovoltaic systems and structured cabling strategies, including cabinet and rack layouts.
  • General Skills Development:
  • Draft using Revit and AutoCAD, manage workloads, contribute to project documentation, and effectively communicate with internal and external stakeholders.

Required Skills and Attributes:
  • Basic understanding of building services design frameworks (e.g. BG 6, RIBA Plan of Work)
  • Interest in electrical engineering within the built environment
  • Strong communication and teamwork abilities
  • Willingness to learn and take initiative
  • Basic experience with Revit, AutoCAD, and Trimble ProDesign is advantageous

We are looking for a candidate who is motivated to pursue a professional qualification. Our trainees are encouraged to follow a structured training pathway, such as the Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Building Services Engineering, available part-time through City College Plymouth. This Level 4 qualification is ideal for individuals already working in the construction industry, particularly in areas such as the design, specification, or management of mechanical and electrical services within construction projects.
